Israel ben Eliezer (c. 1700–1760), called the Baal Shem Tov ("Master of the Good Name"), is regarded as the founder of Hasidism. His teaching stressed joy, fervent prayer, serving God in all deeds, and the divine presence in all things. Spread by his disciples, his ideas profoundly renewed popular Jewish spirituality in Eastern Europe.
