Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-1994), a Jerusalem biochemist and philosopher, held that the value of Judaism lies in serving God for His own sake (lishma) through observance of halakha, not for reward. He sharply criticized any sacralization of the state, the land, or relics, which he called idolatry. He was a controversial moral voice in Israel.
