The festive instrumental music of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe, played by klezmorim at weddings and celebrations, distinct from sung Yiddish theatre. Marked by the clarinet and violin, it expresses both joy and lament. Nearly vanished after the Holocaust and American assimilation, it has enjoyed a powerful international revival since the 1970s.
