Pilpul ("pepper," in the sense of sharp argumentation) denotes a method of Talmudic study based on keen dialectical analysis, the linking of distant sources and the resolution of subtle contradictions. Particularly developed in the yeshivot of Poland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, notably around Jacob Pollak, it was praised for its acuity but also criticized for casuistic excess.
