Minhag Ashkenaz designates the ensemble of liturgical customs developed by the Jews of the Rhineland and subsequently transmitted and diversified throughout Central and Eastern Europe. It is distinguished from the Sephardic rite by its textual formulations, its melodies, its order of prayers, and numerous local customs. Within this tradition, regional variants are distinguished, notably the rite of the Western German Jews and the Polish-Lithuanian minhag more prevalent in Eastern Europe. The Hasidic rite, influenced by Lurianic Kabbalah, constitutes another branch issuing from the Ashkenazic world. These differences bear on the piyyutim recited, the festival customs, and synagogal practices. The richness of these variants testifies to the depth and diversity of traditions within Judaism.
