Hashgachah pratit, "individual providence," denotes the belief in divine supervision extending to the details of each individual's life. Debated by medieval philosophers from Maimonides to Gersonides, and strongly reaffirmed by Hasidism and the Chabad movement, it raises the question of divine action, chance, and free will. It structures a worldview in which nothing happens without intention.
