In the late eighteenth century the rapid expansion of Hasidism provoked sharp opposition from the Mitnagdim ("opponents"), led by the Vilna Gaon, Elijah ben Solomon (1720–1797). These champions of rigorous Talmudic study and sober piety condemned certain Hasidic practices. The conflict, marked by excommunications, lastingly shaped Lithuanian Judaism and the tradition of yeshivot.
