Jewish onomastics studies the history of first names (biblical, theophoric, vernacular) and the appearance of surnames, often imposed by states in the 18th–19th centuries: patronyms, place names, occupational names or abbreviative names (Katz, Segal). It illuminates migrations, languages and identities.
