YIVO (Yidisher Visnshaftlekher Institut), founded in 1925 in Vilna, devoted itself to the scholarly study of the Yiddish language and the civilization of the Jews of Eastern Europe, in its historical, linguistic, literary, and ethnographic dimensions. It gathered archives, books, testimonies, and collections, and played a role in standardizing Yiddish orthography. Regarded as the academy of Yiddish culture, it brought together scholars and amateur collectors in a vast documentary effort. After the destruction of the Jewish world of Eastern Europe during the Shoah, the institute's headquarters were transferred to New York, where a portion of its collections was saved. YIVO remains today a reference institution for research on Ashkenazic culture.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
