Founded in 1803 by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, disciple of the Vilna Gaon, the Volozhin Yeshiva became the prototype of the great modern yeshiva, independent of the local community and welcoming students from all regions. It promoted the study of Talmud for its own sake (Torah lishmah) and trained generations of scholars before its closure by Russian authorities in 1892.
