Joseph Ber Soloveitchik (1903-1993), heir to the Brisk dynasty and a leading figure at Yeshiva University, was the major thinker of American Modern Orthodoxy. In Halakhic Man (1944) and The Lonely Man of Faith (1965), he articulated halakhic rigor with existential phenomenology. He advocated engagement with secular culture and science.
