Joseph Solomon Delmedigo (1591-1655), known as Yashar of Candia, was a physician, mathematician, and astronomer trained in Padua, where he studied under Galileo. He was among the first Jewish scholars to defend heliocentrism and the use of the telescope. A tireless traveler, he spread the new science from Egypt to Lithuania; his Sefer Elim deals with mathematics and astronomy.
