# Introduction

The history of infirmities in the Jewish world is not first and foremost one of diminished bodies: it is the history of a thought which, from its foundational texts onward, confronted the question of the imperfect body, the meaning it carries, and the place it occupies in the community and before God. Where other ancient traditions cast aside, exposed, or sacralized the afflicted body, the Jewish tradition produced a dense casuistry—measuring at each generation the gap between the dignity of the person, ritual requirement, and the reality of deficiency.

The very word "infirmity" encompasses realities that Jewish sources distinguish with care: the mum, physical defect that strikes the priest and the sacrificial animal; the cheresh, the deaf-mute; the blind (iver); the lame; the shoteh, whose affliction pertains to the spirit. This Great Book follows the thread of these categories through the Bible, the Talmud, medieval halakha, and the experience of communities, down to contemporary reinterpretations. It does not tell the story of a family lineage but of a theme that runs through the entire people: the way in which Israel named, judged, protected, and sometimes excluded those whom body or spirit rendered different.
