Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple after the Maccabean victory over the Seleucids in the second century BCE. Over eight days, candles are progressively lit on the hanukkiah, with blessings and the Hallel. The festival is associated with the miracle of the oil cruse, fried foods such as doughnuts and latkes, and the spinning top (dreidel).
