Gershom Scholem (1897-1982), professor at the Hebrew University, established Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism as a full academic field. His works, including Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism (1941) and his study of Sabbatai Zevi, transformed the understanding of Judaism. He analyzed the role of the irrational and of messianism in Jewish history.
