# Introduction
Few gestures carry a weight comparable, in the history of Israel, to that of circumcision. It is not a rite among others, but a sign inscribed in the flesh, transmitted from generation to generation since the narrative of Abraham. The Jewish tradition calls it brit milah — literally "covenant of circumcision" — and this expression already conveys the essential: the gesture is not a simple operation, it is the seal of a pact. Historically, Jewish circumcision can be grasped through a long journey that crosses the ancient Near East, the crisis of Hellenization, Roman repression, medieval polemics, and then the internal debates of modernity. This Great Book intends to follow this thread, not to edify but to honestly restore what the sources allow us to know, and to distinguish what belongs to the archive from what belongs to transmitted narrative. Where documentation is lacking, this book will say so; where tradition and history respond to each other, it will seek to make them dialogue without confusing them.
