# Introduction
Christianity was not born against Judaism, but within it. Jesus of Nazareth, his first disciples, the apostle Paul himself belonged to the Jewish world of first-century Judea and Galilee, a plural world where Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes and various messianic movements coexisted. The separation — what historians call the parting of the ways — was slow, conflictual, never accomplished all at once. To understand the relationship of Christianity to Judaism is therefore to follow a history of thwarted filiation: a younger son who claims to supplant the elder, a theology of substitution that hardens into contempt, then, after the twentieth-century catastrophe, a long work of revision and reconciliation. According to Simon Claude Mimouni, the passage "from priests to rabbis" that structures ancient Judaism precisely covers the era when Christian communities are being born, so that the two traditions forge themselves as mirrors of one another [Mimouni, 2012]. This book traces this relationship at once genealogical and polemical, from common origins to contemporary conciliar declarations, without concealing either the confrontations or the rapprochements.
