Bahya ibn Paquda, a Jewish philosopher and moralist of Muslim Spain, wrote the Hovot ha-Levavot ("Duties of the Heart") in Judeo-Arabic in the eleventh century. The work distinguishes outward duties from the "duties of the heart"—the inner life of faith, love, and fear of God. Deeply spiritual and at times influenced by Sufi spirituality, it became a major classic of Jewish ethics.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
