Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865–1935), first Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Mandatory Palestine, developed a mystical and poetic thought linking Kabbalah, philosophy, and a spiritual Zionism. For him, the return to Zion and even the work of secular pioneers participated in a process of cosmic redemption. His work, notably the Orot, remains a major reference of religious Zionism.
