Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra (1089–1164), poet, grammarian and astronomer born in Spain, composed biblical commentaries marked by rigorous attention to Hebrew grammar and the plain sense (peshat). His concise, often allusive glosses integrate science and linguistics. A tireless traveler, he spread the philological learning of Jewish Andalusia throughout Christian Europe.
