Périodique publié à Philadelphie par Isaac [Leeser](/articles/9708-leeser-isaac). Il parut d'abord en avril 1843, et fut continué comme mensuel jusqu'en mars 1859 inclus, composant seize volumes sous cette forme. En avril 1859, il parut comme hebdomadaire, continuant ainsi jusqu'en mars 1861. En avril 1861, il revint à la forme mensuelle; il continua ainsi jusqu'en 1869, quand il cessa d'exister. Vingt-six volumes en tout furent publiés. Isaac Leeser mourut le 1er février 1868; et le dernier volume parut sous la direction de Mayer Sulzberger. À son époque, c'était la plus importante publication juive aux États-Unis avec une portée mondiale. Une grande partie du travail de Leeser fut d'abord imprimée dans « The Occident ».

Parmi les publications notables qui parurent d'abord dans « The Occident » figuraient la traduction du « Dictionary of Hebrew Authors » de De Rossi, par Mayer Sulzberger, et une série de vingt-huit lettres, sur les « Evidences of Christianity », par Benjamin Dias Fernandes, publiées ultérieurement sous le titre « The Dias Letters ». « The Occident » accorda aussi une certaine attention à l'histoire juive américaine, en publiant une notable série d'articles sur les Juifs de Géorgie et de l'Ohio. Parmi ses collaborateurs figuraient : Mordecai M. Noah, S. M. Isaacs, Jacob de la Motta, D. W. Marks (de Londres, Angleterre), Abraham Rice (de Baltimore), Max Lilienthal, Morris J. Raphall, J. K. Gutheim, Isaac M. Wise, Warder Cresson, Henry S. Jacobs, H. Hochheimer, Sabato Morais, Dr B. Illowy, Isidore Busch, I. Kalisch, David Einhorn, Liebman Adler, Henry Vidaver, A. B. Arnold, Moses A. Dropsie, Grace Aguilar, Mme Rebecca Hyneman, et Cecelia et Marion Moss. Tout au long de son existence, « The Occident » s'affirma fermement pour le judaïsme historique et traditionnel, et protesta énergiquement contre tout changement autre que les plus mineurs dans le rituel et la liturgie.
