Sefer Be'er Yaakov, on the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch and principles of talmudic discussions. By Rabbi Yaakov Berlin. Fürth, 1767. Numerous signatures and ownership inscriptions on the title page: the autograph signature of "the humble Natan, son of our teacher and rabbi Rabbi Yaakov Shimon Adler Katz, may his memory be a blessing," and ownership inscriptions stating that the book belongs to Rabbi Natan Adler of Frankfurt am Main. Additional signatures in Sephardic script by Rabbi Ezra Chayyim Lachmi and Rabbi Yosef Rachamim Lachmi, and a signed ownership inscription by the rabbi Me'at DB"SH [Rabbi David Ben Shimon], who purchased the book from Maharash Lachmi. The holy Gaon Rabbi Natan HaKohen Adler (1741–1800) was born in Frankfurt am Main to his father Rabbi Yaakov Shimon Adler. A Gaon in Torah and a master of the wisdom of Kabbalah. He headed a yeshiva he founded in his home in Frankfurt and was the pre-eminent teacher of Rabbi Moshe Sofer, the Chatam Sofer — who mentions him frequently in his works on matters of halakha and Kabbalah, and writes of him: "my distinguished teacher, the renowned Gaon, the pious, the great eagle" ["eagle" — an allusion to the meaning of the name "Adler"], "my teacher the pious Gaon," "my teacher, the pious one among the priests." He suffered much persecution from the townspeople, who even forbade him from maintaining a minyan in his study house, which was founded upon his distinctive customs according to the teachings of Kabbalah. For a certain period he served as Av Beit Din in Boskovice, but after a time returned to his home and study house in Frankfurt. The rabbis of the Lachmi family — several well-known rabbis from the Lachmi family served as emissaries of the Land of Israel: Rabbi Shalom Lachmi, his son Rabbi Ezra Chayyim Lachmi who served as emissary in Egypt and Tunisia (author of Sha'arei Ezra in manuscript — see concerning him Zachor LeAvraham, 1996, pp. 93–96, Likdoshim Asher Ba'Aretz, entry 235 and entry 481) and Rabbi Yosef Rachamim Lachmi. The final seal "Me'at DB"SH" — the Gaon Rabbi David Ben Shimon (1826–1879), born in Morocco, ascended to Jerusalem in 1855 and founded the community of the Western congregation (Jews originating from the Maghreb, North Africa), in which he served as rabbi. Among his works: Sha'arei Tzedek and others. His son is the Gaon Rabbi Rafael Aharon Ben-Shimon, Chief Rabbi of Alexandria in Egypt. [3], 144 leaves, 29.5 cm. Fair to good condition, worm damage, staining and wear, old Jerusalem binding from the 19th century with leather spine. Attached is an expert's certificate identifying the signature as that of the Gaon Rabbi Natan Adler.
