Letter from Rabbi David Sperber Chief Rabbi of Brașov, to Rabbi Ḥayim Lieb Larner of New York. [Brașov], year "Blotting Out of Amalek According to the Small Count" [1948]. Long and interesting letter in his handwriting and signature, containing many details about his life and the condition of the Jewish communities in Romania after the Holocaust, inquiries about kashrut arrangements in America and a request that they care for him due to his difficult economic situation. Among the things he recounts that he was asked to serve as president of the "Executive Committee" and chief rabbi in Romania "to be a watchful eye over the destroyed communities" and he did not refuse "for perhaps for this the Holy One, blessed be He, left me alive". The letter also refers to the War of Independence in the Land of Israel, which was then in full swing, and among other things Rabbi Sperber tries to clarify whether it is true the rumor "that the Ḥazzan of Ger, may he live long, and also the Rabbi of Husht [= the Ḥaredi rabbi from Hungary] residing in Jerusalem the Holy City, may it be rebuilt and established, are traveling from there to the United States until the wrath passes". Rabbi David Sperber - the Sage of Brașov (1875-1962, Treasure of the Rabbis 5075), one of the greatest rabbis of Galicia and Romania. Born in Zablotov to a Hasidic Vizhnitz family. Student of the Sage Rabbi Meir Erieck. From 1908 he served as rabbi and from 1922 rabbi in Brașov. Author of "Apraḳista de'Aniyya", "Ḥitam le-David" and writings in all areas of Torah. He worked extensively during the Holocaust period for the benefit of European Jewry, and became famous for the marriage authorization documents he permitted after the Holocaust. In 1949 he ascended to the Land of Israel and was one of the heads of the "Council of Torah Sages". 30 cm. Medium condition, tears at fold marks.
