Letter from Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Sander Kahana Shapira to Dr. Abraham Elihu Harkavi. Malsch, 5661 [1901]. In his handwriting and signed, with his seal and the seal of the yeshiva. An appeal to Dr. Harkavi, known for his connections and influence in helping to establish the yeshiva that he founded in Malsch. The Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Sander Kahana Shapira (5611–5683), one of the most distinguished geonim of Lithuania. Grandson of Rabbi Ḥayim of Volozhyn, student of the Netziv and author of the "Beit ha-Levi". The great scholars and heads of yeshivot in Lithuania held him in extraordinary reverence. In 5645 he was chosen as rabbi of Malsch and established his yeshiva there, "Aneif Etz Ḥayim" [named after the yeshiva "Etz Ḥayim" in Volozhyn which closed at that time], which became one of the important yeshivot in Lithuania. In 5663 he moved to serve as rabbi in Krinitz and transferred his yeshiva there. His son is Rabbi Abraham Duber Shapira, author of "Devar Abraham", av beit din of Kovna. In 5681 he went up to the Land of Israel, settled in Jerusalem and died a short time later. Two volumes of his "Ḥiddushei ha-Graz"s" were printed (Jerusalem Institute, 5753). 28 cm. Good condition, stains and fold marks.
