Bundle of manuscripts of responsa and novellae in the handwriting and with the signatures of the Gaon Rabbi Asher Lifszyc Zarchi, Radzivlov (Poland), 5643–5647 1883–1886. Des-Moines (Des Moines, Iowa), United States, 5654 1894. The responsa are part of the responsa collection of Rabbi Asher Lifszyc on Yoreh De'ah and Even Ha'ezer. In the responsa before us, he discusses questions about the spelling of the name of the city Des-Moines in bills of divorce, the question of purchasing a building for idol worship and converting it to a synagogue [in the course of this he copies a page from a responsum of Mahariakh Viderowitz from Moscow, which was sent to him]. Rabbi Asher Lifszyc Zarchi (5624–5692), one of the great rabbis of America, was born in Kaunas and is a member of the family of the famous Gaon Rabbi Shimon Zarchi, among the rabbis of Taurage, Vilna and Jerusalem. He studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva and received rabbinic ordination from the great scholars of Lithuania. From approximately 5643, he resided in the town of Radzivlov (a town near Zambrów in the Lomza district), and according to the writings before us it appears that he served there in the rabbinate. In 5653 he arrived in America and served in the rabbinate in Brownsville Brooklyn and in 5654 he was accepted for the rabbinate of Des-Moines (State of Iowa). In 5663 he moved to serve in the rabbinate in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, where he conducted his duties for about thirty years with distinction and his words were received with great honor. He was among the strict Orthodox rabbis who founded the "Association of Rabbis of the United States and Canada". See attached material about him. Rabbi Chaim Jacob Viderowitz (died 5671), served as a Chabad hassidic rabbi in Moscow. In 5653 he arrived in America and served in the rabbinate in New York for the congregation of Hasidim and was known as "Chief Rabbi of the Sephardic congregation in America". 68 written pages, approximately 32 cm. Fair to poor condition, paper dark, brittle and dry, with many damages, but most of the text is preserved.
