Adam and Eve hiding behind the tree of the garden, fabric appliqué by artist Kopel Gorbin. Israel, [second half of the 1960s]. Felt fabric appliqué. Signed: "Kopel" (embroidered). Adam and Eve are hiding behind the tree of the garden, their faces expressing dismay. Around it appears the verse: "And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden... and the man and his wife hid themselves [...] in the midst of the tree of the garden." In the upper and lower margins are fabric loops, apparently for hanging as a tapestry. Artist Kopel Gorbin (1923–1990) was born in Vilna and educated there with Hebrew instruction; during the Holocaust he was held in concentration camps. After World War II he emigrated to Sweden and lived there until 1950, when he moved to Eretz Israel and began studying art at Bezalel. He completed his studies in 1957; he became known as a tapestry artist and graphic designer; his works were exhibited at the Israel Museum and in various galleries in Israel and abroad. 87×69 cm (without fabric loops).
