Un livre de destin utilisé dans la divination populaire et nommé d'après Ahithophel. Dans les légendes juives du Moyen Âge, Ahithophel joue un rôle quelque peu similaire à celui de Méphistophélès (voir Steinschneider, "Pseudepigraphische Literatur," p. 80, note 2). Cassel voudrait même traduire « Ahithophel » par « le Frère du Mauvais »; considérant _tofel_ comme une formation ancienne de _diabolus_, à l'appui de quoi il cite l'allemand _tiuval_ et _tievel-teufel_ (comparer "Mischle Sindbad," p. 330, Berlin, 1888). R. Moses Isserles, à son tour, rapporte avoir lu dans un « très vieux livre », dans lequel se trouvaient les philosophies et les portraits de différents penseurs, que Socrate avait reçu sa sagesse d'Asaf le Corahite et d'Ahithophel ("Torat ha-'Olah," i. xi.). Conformément à la conception populaire du caractère d'Ahithophel, qui était à la fois diabolique et omniscient, au Moyen Âge on attribua à celui-ci la paternité d'une œuvre cabalistique, « Sefer Goralot » (Livre des Sorts). Selon sa préface, elle révèle le « grand secret pour obtenir une réponse sans le tirage au sort ou le calcul, en posant indifféremment la main sur une tablette contenant les nombres de un à quatre-vingt-dix, ou quatre-vingt-neuf ». Le livre, de plus, aurait gisé caché à Alexandrie, et aurait été utilisé par la suite à Tibériade et ailleurs, « la légende habituelle concernant les écrits pseudépigraphes », comme le dit Steinschneider.
