Zhydachiv (Żydaczów in Polish) is the birthplace of the Hasidic lineage of Zhidachov, founded by Rabbi Tsvi Hirsh Eichenstein in the early 19th century, particularly influential in Galicia. The Jewish community had been present there since the 16th century. The Holocaust claimed nearly all of the town's Jews, who were deported to the Bełżec camp.
