An ancient capital of the Yemeni imamate and Islamic center of learning, Zabid counted a Jewish presence documented in medieval Arabic sources and in the Cairo Genizah. Jews there were active in crafts (goldsmithing, weaving) until the major migrations to Israel in the 20th century.
