Winchester, the ancient capital of the kingdom of England, hosted a well-documented medieval Jewish community from the time of the Norman Conquest (eleventh century). The Jews of Winchester, mentioned in the royal Pipe Rolls, were at the center of the financial and religious tensions of the Plantagenet kingdom before the general expulsion of 1290.
