Termez (Tirmidh), a border city in Uzbekistan on the Amu Darya (Surxondaryo), had a Jewish presence attested in the Middle Ages by Arab geographical sources and in the 19th century during the Russian expansion into Central Asia. The Bukharian Jews of the region participated in cross-border caravan trade with Afghanistan.
