Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely in Hungarian), a city in central Transylvania, was home to an important and dynamic Jewish community at the beginning of the 20th century, endowed with recognized cultural and educational institutions. The community, largely Hungarian-speaking, was deported to Auschwitz in 1944.
