Tamentit is the main center of a federation of oases in the Touat (Algerian Sahara) where a significant Jewish community prospered from the fourteenth to the fifteenth century, playing a key role in the trans-Saharan trade in gold and spices. In 1492, the Islamist leader al-Maghili organized a pogrom that destroyed the community and its synagogues.
