A port of Campania and the former seat of a celebrated school of medicine, Salerno was home to an active medieval Jewish community engaged in medicine and commerce from the 10th century onward. Jewish practitioners contributed to the medical translations from Arabic into Latin that made the Salernitan school renowned.
