Roman, a city in Romanian Moldavia (Neamț county), possessed one of the oldest Jewish communities in the region, attested as early as the seventeenth century. Jews constituted a significant portion of the population in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, animating trade and crafts. The Shoah and subsequent emigration considerably reduced the community.
