Rimavská Sobota (Rimaszombat in Hungarian), a city of Gemer in southern Slovakia, was home to an organized Jewish community since the 18th century. Its 19th-century synagogue, still partially visible, bears witness to this presence. The community was deported to Auschwitz in 1944.
