The fourth and smallest of the communities of the papal Comtat Venaissin, Pernes-les-Fontaines housed a carrière (Jewish quarter) with a synagogue and its own institutions from the late fourteenth century until the Revolution. The community was attached to the pontifical Consistory of Avignon and practiced the Comtadin rite (minhag Avignon).
