Ouargla is an ancient Saharan oasis (Algeria) where a Jewish presence has been attested since the Middle Ages, linked to the trans-Saharan trade routes connecting the Maghreb to sub-Saharan Africa. The local Jewish community gradually disappeared following French colonization and the exodus northward.
