An oasis of the Tunisian Djerid, Nefta was home to a Jewish community active in trans-Saharan trade and local crafts from the 16th to the 20th century. This presence was part of the network of Jewish communities in the oases of southern Tunisia, linking the Mediterranean to the Saharan trade routes.
