Mendoza, the wine-producing capital of Andean Argentina, welcomed a Jewish community as early as the late 19th century, composed of immigrants from North Africa (notably Morocco) and Eastern Europe. The community quickly became institutionalized with the founding of synagogues and cultural organizations.
