Region: Inde (Kerala)
Intersection register · custodian, not owner
Mattancherry, a quarter of Cochin (Kerala), was the heart of Jewish life in southern India for nearly four centuries. The Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 by Sephardic Jews who had fled Portugal, is the oldest synagogue still in use in Asia. The community was divided between Paradesi (white Jews of European origin) and Malabari (indigenous black Jews); after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the great majority of the community made aliya, leaving only a handful of members in Cochin.

The days of this book
