Lutsk (Łuck in Polish), the historic capital of Volhynia, was home to a Jewish community since the 16th century, one of the most significant in the region. The town possessed active Jewish institutions — synagogues, yeshivot, press — and Jews formed a considerable share of the population. During the Holocaust, tens of thousands of Jews from Lutsk and the surrounding area were massacred in 1941–1942.
