Kyustendil is a spa town in southwestern Bulgaria. Its ancient Sephardic Jewish community distinguished itself in 1943 when its members signed a collective petition and refused to hand over their Jewish fellow citizens to the authorities, contributing to saving Bulgaria's Jews from deportation.
