The administrative center of the Tafilalet province (today Errachidia), Ksar es-Souk had a mellah housing Jewish merchant and artisan families serving the palm groves and oases of the Tafilalet. The community declined after Moroccan independence and emigrated en masse in the 1950s–1960s.
