Kolomyia (Kolomea), an important city in eastern Galicia on the Prut, harbored a significant Jewish community since the 15th century. A center of commerce and crafts, it also had Jewish educational and cultural institutions. During the Shoah, the Jews of Kolomyia were deported to the Bełżec extermination camp or shot on the spot.
