A border town in Iranian West Azerbaijan, Khoy had a Jewish community attested in Ottoman and Persian sources from the 16th–19th centuries. Its position as a commercial crossroads between Iran, the Ottoman Empire, and the Caucasus favored the presence of Jewish merchants.
