Khiva, the former capital of the khanate of Khwarezm (present-day Uzbekistan), was home to a community of Bukharan Jews from the 17th to the 19th century. These Jews, who specialized in the silk and dye trade, lived in a separate quarter and were subject to the jurisdiction of the khan; their situation improved after the Russian conquest of 1873.
