Jūrmala, a seaside resort on the Baltic coast west of Riga, was a favored summer destination for the Jewish bourgeoisie of Riga in the 19th and 20th centuries. Affluent Jewish families rented or owned villas there, making the locality a space of seasonal Jewish sociability.
