Idanha-a-Velha (the ancient Egitania), a Visigothic episcopal town in Beira Baixa, has yielded Hebrew inscriptions dating from late Antiquity (4th–7th century), attesting to an ancient Jewish presence. A community is again documented in the medieval period, up to the expulsion decree of 1496–1497.

The days of this book

This book bears no memory day yet. The sources that document Idanha-a-Velha give years and centuries, never a day; we do not invent one.
