Hrubieszów, a town in the Lublin region near the Ukrainian border, possessed an ancient Jewish community attested from the 16th century. In the 19th century, Jews represented a large proportion of the population and dominated local trade. During the Holocaust, the community was liquidated; its members were deported to the Sobibor extermination camp.
